Mumbai
Mumbai is the capital of the state of Maharashtra, is the commercial hub of India and also its largest city, with a population of more than 21 Mn. Mumbai's nature as the most eclectic and cosmopolitan Indian city is symbolized by the presence of Bollywood, the centre of the globally-influential Hindi film and TV industries but is also home to India's largest slum population.

Location

Mumbai formed by the joining of seven islands, reclaimed from the sea, lies at the mouth of the Ulhas River on the western coast of India. Mumbai is bounded by the Arabian Sea to the west. Many parts of the city lie just above sea level, with elevations ranging from 33 ft. to 50 ft. Sanjay Gandhi National Park is located partly in the Mumbai suburban district, and partly in the Thane district. Mumbai has excellent connections by rail, road and air to the rest of India and is one of the aviation hubs for international connections from India.

History

Excavations that the 7 islands that formed Mumbai were inhabited since the stone ages. The islands have always be highly contested because of its geographic location and over its 2,000 year history has changed numerous time. The British finally gained control of the islands from the Portuguese in 1661, when it the Portuguese monarch transferred the islands to the British throne as dowry during Catherine de Berganza’s marriage to Charles II.
