Minty Breeze - Homestay located right behind a Jungle

For most wildlife enthusiasts, Thekkady is synonymous with the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and the Periyar National Park, the biggest in the state. This homestay is located right beside the jungles which house the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Jaison James and his wife Raji make the perfect hosts. Jaison runs a travel agency in the nearby town of Kumaly. He has also travelled extensively and this has helped him incorporate into this homestay the best features of various hotels and homestays he has visited across India. When you stay at this homestay–which gets its name from the mint plants in the James’ garden-you wake up to the chirping of the birds and are lulled to sleep by the rustling of the trees. The house is simply built and well-maintained and the upper floor is set aside exclusively for the guests–while this ensures that guests gets the authentic homestay experience, they also get their own privacy and space. The area earmarked for the guests has two spacious bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a common sitting room that with a television, and a terrace-sit out. The interiors are done in a classy, minimalistic way – the few decorations are beautiful and stand out, like the reproductions of paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, one of the greatest painters of India, who hailed from Kerala.

The house is located right beside the jungles–which you can see through your windows–almost in the middle of nowhere, yet with modern amenities a mere ten minutes drive away. Jaison James and his family personally cater to the needs of the guests-Jaison’s wife Raji personally receives the guests and ensures that all their needs are met. Guests are served authentic Kerala food served by Jaison’s mother Theresiamma, who is known for her chicken curry and other non-vegetarian dishes. Most of the ingredients are taken from the family’s kitchen garden; and guests lucky enough to visit during the right seasons can gorge on strawberries and other fruits from the family’s farm. Those who would like a tour guide to take them around the area need look no further than James, Jaison’s father, who knows the region like the back of his hand. He will gladly accompany you on your sightseeing trips, showing you places and sights not mentioned in the regular guidebooks, telling you the little-known facts and interesting stories behind them. Guests who want to experience some of the local culture can visit the nearby Kathakali and Kalaripayattu schools to watch a show, or choose to watch a Mohiniyattam/ Bharatanatyam performance at the homestay. Most guests who have stayed at this homestay make plans to return there in the near future; it’s difficult to say whether this is due to the hosts’ warm and sincere way of dealing with the guests or Theresiamma’s delicious South Indian dishes, or the sights and adventures nearby, which are available in plenty. One thing is for sure–stay at this homestay, and you’ll have an experience you will remember fondly.
